Kavalan is an exceptional distillery located in Yilan County, Taiwan, globally recognized for its high-quality whiskies. Founded in 2005 by visionary entrepreneur Mr. Tien-Tsai Lee, it released its first bottling in 2008. T.T. Lee's passion for creating the very first Taiwanese whisky propelled Kavalan to the top of the most respected distilleries, rivaling the great houses of Scotland and Japan. This prestige was notably consolidated when Jim Murray awarded the distillery the highly coveted "New Whisky of the Year" prize for the Solist Fino Sherry Cask in his 2012 Whisky Bible. The distillery belongs to the renowned King Car Group, a symbol of strength and innovation.
The Kavalan distillery benefits from a pure and mineral-rich water source coming from the heights of the Snow Mountain, which gives its whisky a unique base. The aging takes place in an environment with exceptional climatic conditions: a combination of intense heat and humidity tempered by sea and mountain breezes. This warm subtropical climate allows accelerated maturation, offering complex aromas and unparalleled richness, much faster than in traditional whisky-producing regions. The distillation is done according to a rigorous double distillation method. The first step separates the alcohol from the water, while the second distinguishes the "head," the "heart," and the "tail" of the distillate. Only the best part of the heart is kept and transferred into selected casks for maturation, thus emphasizing the crucial importance of the choice of casks in the final flavor definition. When maturation reaches its peak, the casks are carefully emptied and "Kavalan" water is added to reach the optimal alcohol degree, except when the whisky is bottled at cask strength.
The King Car 40th Anniversary is a prestigious edition launched in 2020, made from whisky distilled in 2012 and aged in an extremely rare red wine cask. This exceptional cuvée is presented in a 1.5-liter magnum, accompanied by a luxurious wood and leather box, and enhanced by an engraved Swarovski crystal glass. The bottle stopper was also designed with the finesse and elegance emblematic of Swarovski, making this edition a unique collector's item for enthusiasts and connoisseurs.
