Château LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2001
The history of the Lafite vineyard is old. On an estate that already included vine plants, Jacques de Ségur structure the vineyard at the end of the seventeenth century and the reputation of this wine is already established at a good level. His son Alexander expanded the estate by marrying in 1695 the heiress of Latour. From this union is born Nicolas-Alexandre, who builds at the beginning of the XVIII ° century the prestige and the fame of Lafite, the wine being plebiscite with Versailles and already also across the Channel.
On the death of the latter, Lafite knows a succession of owners, it will be sold at auction after the Revolution, but the quality will be maintained at the best level thanks to the care of its directors, the family of Joseph Goudal. Château Lafite will thus be ranked 1er Cru in 1855.
In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquires, at auction again, the estate which has since remained the property of his family. Apart from its exceptional soil (a soil of deep gravel, resting on marl and on a limestone subsoil), the quality is explained in particular by the average age of the vineyard (over 40 years), a low yield in hectare and a very strict selection. In the years 1960-1970 the wines were of a lower quality, because of a less strict management of the domain and the vinification process.
Since 1975, the castle, celebrated by the amateurs of the whole world, produces magnificent wines, thanks to the dynamic direction of Eric de Rothschild. Exceptionally fine, they display a fabulous aromatic complexity. Impressive material, their potential of guard seems unlimited.
