Hampden - Great House Distillery - 2020 Edition - 59%
Hampden Estate is one of the oldest iconic sugar plantations in Jamaica, a true historical gem dating back to 1753, when the estate belonged to Mr. Archibald Stirling from Scotland. In 1779, Mr. Stirling had the famous Hampden Great House built, whose ground floor served as a rum warehouse until the early 20th century. The Farquarson family operated this land rich in sugarcane cultivation and rum production until 2003, before the property was taken over by the Jamaica Sugar Company. This estate is internationally recognized for having the most fertile sugarcane lands in Jamaica, with the highest sugar production from this crop. Historically, Hampden rums were exclusively destined for export to Europe, notably England and Scotland. In 2009, Everglades Farms Ltd, owned by the renowned Hussey family, acquired the estate through a divestment process orchestrated by the Jamaica Sugar Company, a Jamaican government entity. Since then, Everglades Farms has made major investments in the distillery, creating sustainable jobs in the heart of Trelawny and providing significant support to more than 17 local communities and schools.
The water used in rum production is a crucial and unique element, as it comes not from underground aquifers but from its own exclusive mountain water collection system, thus ensuring optimal purity. After use, this water is returned clean and healthy to nature, demonstrating rigorous environmental respect. The distillery practices a long and natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts, offering a unique aromatic complexity. Hampden Estate is one of the last distilleries in the world still using traditional batch distillation, currently operating four stills. The oldest, a John Dore still installed in 1960, has an impressive capacity of 7,560 liters. The rums produced benefit from extended tropical aging, exceeding 7 years under the warm Jamaican climate, which corresponds to about 25 years of maturation in a European environment. Moreover, Hampden rums are produced, aged, and bottled without any artificial additives: no added sugar, tannins, caramel, or glycerin, thus guaranteeing exceptional purity and authenticity.
Hampden Great House Distillery 2020 Edition pays tribute to the historic estate of the Jamaican distillery, used in the early 1900s as a barrel storage warehouse. This unique edition is a meticulous blend of 80% Hampden OWH (containing between 80 and 120 g of esters) distilled in 2013, combined with 20% Hampden DOK (with a very high concentration of 1,500 to 1,600 g of esters) distilled in 2017, for a powerful and complex aromatic profile.
