Hampden - Great House Distillery - 2023 Edition - 57%
Hampden Estate is one of the oldest iconic sugar plantations in Jamaica, founded in 1753 under the ownership of Mr. Archibald Stirling from Scotland. In 1779, Mr. Stirling had the famous Hampden Great House built, whose ground floor served as a rum warehouse until the early 20th century. The Farquarson family operated this prestigious estate, specialized in sugar and rum production, until 2003, when it was acquired by the Jamaica Sugar Company. Known for having some of the most fertile sugarcane lands in Jamaica, this plantation produces the largest quantity of sugar from locally milled cane. Historically, Hampden rums were exclusively exported to Europe, notably England and Scotland. In 2009, Everglades Farms Ltd, owned by the Hussey family, bought the estate through a public offer during the divestment of assets by the Jamaica Sugar Company, owned by the Jamaican government. Since then, Everglades Farms has made significant investments in the distillery, creating sustainable jobs in Trelawny and bringing modern infrastructure to more than 17 local communities and schools.
Unique in its ecological approach, the water used for rum production comes not from underground aquifers but from its own exclusive mountain water collection system, ensuring minimal environmental impact with clean and healthy water discharged back into nature after use. Fermentation is carried out traditionally with natural yeasts, giving a unique richness to the aromatic profiles. Hampden Estate is one of the few distilleries worldwide to maintain batch distillation thanks to its four historic stills still in operation, including a John Dore dating from 1960 capable of holding up to 7,560 liters. Its rums benefit from authentic aging in the Jamaican tropical climate for over 7 years, a process equivalent to 25 years of aging in Europe, which gives them an incomparable character. The entire range is produced, aged, and bottled without any additives: no added sugar, no tannins, no caramel, no glycerin, thus offering a pure and natural rum of exceptional quality.
Hampden Great House Distillery 2023 Edition evokes the history of this iconic Jamaican estate that served as a warehouse for barrel storage since the early 20th century. This prestigious edition is a carefully crafted blend of the most distinctive and representative marks of the distillery, embodying the very essence of Jamaican terroir and Hampden's artisanal know-how.
