Château Lafite Rothschild is located in Pauillac , in the Bordeaux wine region. It is classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The property was purchased by Baron James de Rothschild in 1868. The vineyard is divided into three parts: the vines on the hillsides around the château provide the raw material for the grand vin, while the adjacent Carruades plateau to the west is more responsible for the second wine that bears its name. In addition, a 4.5 hectare plot of land in Saint-Estèphe also belongs to the estate; exceptionally, it is allowed to include this fruit in its Pauillac classified wines.
