Akkeshi (Whisky)

Akkeshi Distillery is located in Hokkaido, in rural northern Japan . It was founded by Keiichi Toita , president and representative director of Kenten Co. Ltd. Its history begins in 2013 when the company began testing aging batches of raw spirits purchased from two existing distilleries in Japan. Construction of the distillery began in 2015; the area surrounding Akkeshi Distillery is wetland, with a layer of peat and below it, soft, weak soil extending up to 50 meters below the Earth's surface. It is impossible to build anything on such soil without taking special measures. For this reason, they used the Columbus construction method, which involves removing the soil under the foundation and putting polystyrene infill in its place. A year later, employees from Forsyths in Scotland visited and installed the stills and other equipment for the start of the distillation process. The team is dedicated to making whisky using traditional Scottish distillation methods to create a whisky similar to Islay Malts. The first Akkeshi Malt was released in 2018.
