HSE (Habitation Saint Etienne) was known as Habitation La Maugée and dates from 1863. It was a Martinican sugar refinery, but Amedée Aubery converted it to a distillery when he bought it in 1882. This young Captain of Industry modernized the buildings and supplied the estate with energy thanks to the Lézarde river, which is still used today to dilute sugar cane juice.
In 1994, Yves and José Hayot bought the property after the receivership of the former owners and carried out new renovations to the house. The property is then classified as a Historic Monument. Saint-Etienne rum is distilled in a traditional copper Creole columnstill from the Simon distillery located in Le François (Martinique).
