The Altenberg is the very symbol of Jean-Michel Deiss' work on the erasure of grape varieties in favor of the terroir of this great Alsace wine.
This terroir of Jurassic limestone and lias marls brings hard Jurassic limestones into contact with Lias marls. These formations, rich in fossils, formed a red clay-limestone soil, rich in limestone rocks, where the vines must dive deeply to find their energy. The Altenberg micro-climate, the result of its southern exposure, is hot, dry and almost overexposed.
The maturities of the grapes impose the domination of the terroir over the planted grape varieties. This synthetic wine then renews itself with the old Alsatian tradition of wines for aging. On the nose, this wine gives off aromas of very intense honey, dried fruits, and some sweet spices. On the palate, it is full bodied but balanced. Very long finish with dried fruits and honey. An exceptional wine to taste now.
