Château Mukhrani - Saperavi 2018
Château Mukhrani is located in the Mukhrani region, in Georgia. In 1512 Château Mukhrani became the estate of the prince of the governing royal family Bagrationi. Mukhranian wine production was established by Ivane Mukhranbatoni a famous representative of royal family, political and public figure of the 19th century. During the Soviet time, Château Mukhrani was abandoned and almost destroyed. In 2002, a group of businessmen, Frederik Paulsen, Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze laid basis for restoration of the project of Château Mukhrani. Group intended to revive the estate to its former glory and re-establish production at Mukhrani, combining modern and traditional technologies. Since 2007, Château Mukhrani is making wine from grapes (local endemic and international varieties) harvested in its own 102-hectares vineyards.
This wine is made with Saperavi, a dark-skinned, pink-fleshed grape variety originally from Georgia. After selective hand-picking to reach the highest quality of fruit, the grapes are destemmed and the fermentation begins. Extraction is made with pumping over, punching down and rack and return techniques. The malolactic fermentation is done 7 to 8 months after the alcohol fermentation. The juice is fractioned and blended to the final style, 20% of the blend goes into French, American and Caucasian oak barrels. Once mature enough, wine from the barrels joins its other part and only then is prepared for bottling.
