KOPKE - Porto - Tawny - 10 years old
Kopke is the oldest House of Porto, founded in 1638 in Portugal . The company was founded by Nicolau Köpke , the consul general of the Hanseatic League (historical association of northern European merchant towns). He ships his first bottles of wine to Northern Europe two years after moving from Hamburg to Portugal. In 1781, the House bought a farm in the Douro, thus changing from wine shipper to producer, focusing more on fortified Port wines.
The 10-year-old Tawny is a blend of traditional Douro grape varieties (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz, etc.). The grapes are picked by hand then destemmed and crushed. Maceration takes place in traditional lagares during fermentation until the desired level of sweetness is reached. The wines that make up the blend have each matured in oak barrels for varying periods of time, with the average age of all the wines in the blend defining the age on the label. Grape brandy is then added to create the final fortified wine. This wine contains 114 g/L of residual sugar.
