Gaja - Barolo - Dagromis 2018
Gaja is located in Barbaresco, Piedmont , Italy . The company was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja with just 2 hectares of vines in Barbaresco. Each generation has witnessed expansion, although Angelo Gaja , who took over full-time in 1970, is often credited with the field's most recent success. He was responsible for overseeing radical changes in the vineyards and cellars and introducing Barbaresco's famous single-plot wines such as Sori San Lorenzo or Costa Russi. Gaja's expansion beyond Barbaresco began in 1988 with the acquisition of the Sperss vineyard in the neighboring Barolo denomination. In 1994, Gaja took over the 27-hectare Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino, followed by the 118-hectare Ca' Marcanda estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany. Gaja is famous for modernizing Piedmont, introducing international grape varieties and winemaking practices more common in Bordeaux or California. The estate gained a lot of attention when it began blending a small amount of Barbera in all of its wines (except Barbaresco and Barolo), relegating them to the Langhe DOC classification.
