TOBERMORY - Gin - 43.3%
Tobermory Distillery is located on the Isle of Mull , off the west coast of Scotland . Established in 1798 , it remains the only whiskey distillery on the Isle of Mull and one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland. In 1797, John Sinclair , a kelp-type seaweed merchant, requested a lease of 57 acres of land on the area known as Ledaig in order to build housing and a distillery. However, the application was rejected and he only received permission to build a brewery. Not one to give up easily, he stuck to his original plan and a year later the Ledaig Distillery was established. In the 1930s, the Great Depression and a decade of Prohibition in the United States saw demand for whiskey plummet, causing the distillery to shut down for 41 long years. It reopened in 1993 after being purchased by Burn Stewart Distillers. Since 2013, the distillery has been owned by Distell . The distillery produces Tobermory Gin and two distinct Single Malts: an unpeated Tobermory and a heavily peated Ledaig . Both malts are produced using the same stills, washbacks (fermentation tanks), mash tuns (mash tanks) and the same water, but the two whiskeys have a completely different character due to the malted barley used.
Gin is made from a neutral grain spirit and distillate from the stills used to produce Tobermory whisky, distilled until pure and fresh. All plants are infused for at least 24 hours in this base distillate. The plants used are juniper, heather, tea, elderflower and orange peel . This Gin received the “Best Classic Scottish Gin” award at the World Gin Awards 2020, only 6 months after its release. The bottle features the village of Tobermory with its colorful houses.
