“Why are there no whisky distilleries Sweden?” one of the friends asked. None of the others could answer the question, leaving it floating in the air. Sweden has no tradition of making whisky. When the three friends began to explore whether it was possible to create a Swedish Single Malt whisky, they only saw opportunities: in Sweden is found one of the world’s purest water, filtered to perfection since the Ice Age. It is no coincidence that the distillery is located next to a boulder with constant access to the crystal clear waters. The Swedish barley develops a special sweetness during the long summer days, a sweetness that has become one of the cornerstones of Mackmyra’s whisky. A large part of the whisky is stored in new Swedish oak. The Swedish oak grows slowly in the harsh climate and gives the whisky a harsher flavor than American oak. The whisky gets a fiery spice balanced by sweetness similar to caramelised sugar. Today the group of friends and Angela d'Orazio, the master blender, produce whisky with the same joy of discovery and experimentation as they did when starting in 1999, while producing a whisky without additives and with as little environmental impact as possible.
Since Winter 2013, two limited editions are released each year. This Seasonal series features unusual finishes that reflect the current season. Mackmyra Grönt Te draws inspiration from two of Angela d'Orazio's passions; travel to new cultures and bring to life innovative combinations of flavours and senses. The result is a Swedish whisky that has been finished in Ex-Oloroso casks. A blend of Oloroso wine and the best Japanese green tea leaves seasoned the barrels: Yame Sencha, Yame Gyokuro, Kaoribo Hojicha and Yame Matcha Shinobi.
