Darnley's Spiced - Navy Strength - 57%
Darnley's story begins in 1565 when Lord Darnley first met his future wife, Mary Queen of Scots, at Wemyss Castle in Fife, on the east coast of Scotland. Centuries later, the new generation of the Wemyss family used this historic moment as the inspiration for the name Darnley's Gin and the elderflower that grew wild around the castle inspired their first gin recipe. .
Wemyss Malts (pronounced 'Weyms' Malts') is an independent bottler from Scotland . The company was founded in 2005 by brother and sister William and Isabella Wemyss .
Darnley's Navy Strength Spiced uses the same botanicals as Darney's Spiced Gin (juniper, angelica root, coriander seed, cinnamon, cumin, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, grains of paradise and cassia) with a higher proportion of juniper . It is inspired by the career in the Royal Navy of their ancestor Sir Rosslyn Wemyss, who commanded ships around the world and rose to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet. While at sea, ships' officers were always given a daily ration of gin which had to pass a gunpowder test to prove it contained more than 57% alcohol.
