Colmant - Cap Classique Brut Reserve
Colmant is located in the Franschhoek region of South Africa . The estate is entirely devoted to the production of sparkling wines. It was founded in 2005 by Jean-Philippe Colmant , originally from Belgium and ex-maker of tombstones. At 36, he decided to emigrate with his family and moved to Franschhoek in 2002. Here, Jean-Philippe created the first winery in South Africa solely dedicated to the production of Cap Classique , and soon after he started the importation of famous Champagne Houses. In 2019, Paul Gerber , emblematic figure of Cap Classique, joined the team as winemaker. The Cap Classiques reflect the terroir of the different South African regions by showing maturity while maintaining freshness and balance. The team exclusively uses traditional Champagne grape varieties (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) in the production process.
Colmant Brut Reserve is the estate's flagship cuvée. It is a blend of Pinot Noir (52%) and Chardonnay (48%) , with a proportion of reserve wines from previous vintages (20%). The grapes come from Franschhoek, Robertson and Elgin. Part of the base wine (10%) is aged in French oak barrels . The wine is made according to the traditional method, and is aged on slats for a minimum of 30 months for its second fermentation in the bottle.
