THE PEAT MONSTER - Cask Strength - 20th Anniversary - Limited Edition 2023 - 56.70%
Compass Box Whiskey is a Scotch whiskey production company, founded by American John Glaser in 2000. After working in the wine trade and then for the great distiller Johnnie Walker, John Glaser took the plunge and launched his own whiskey business. making whiskey in his kitchen. A decade later, the company has successfully established stocks of matured whiskeys in Scotland, with a mixing room for blends and an office in London. Compass Box Whiskey sources cooperage oak from the French Vosges Forest and the woods of Missouri, USA. The company carefully selects each cask for its blends. Once blended, the whiskey is returned to the cask to develop additional flavor and character for six months to three years.
The company sparked controversy in 2015 due to disclosing too much information on their labels, particularly details of distilleries, cask types, ages and proportions in final blends. John Glaser has therefore launched a Scotch Whiskey Transparency Campaign with the aim of giving producers the opportunity to fully disclose the composition of a blend.
This limited edition Peat Monster was created to celebrate its 20th anniversary and to celebrate America's influence on Scotch whiskey more broadly. Originally, James Saxon and Alex Driver produced a peated whiskey called Monster for the Goldstein family at the Park Avenue Liquor Shop in New York City in 2003. Following its popularity, they created a new batch under the name "Peat Monster". and integrates it into their basic range. Peat Monster, like most Scotch whiskeys, owes its maturation tanks to the American whisk(e)y industry and its practice of using casks only once. To showcase the artistry of American cooperage, they matured some of the whiskey used for this special limited edition in seasoned virgin American oak casks , made especially for Compass Box in Missouri . It is a blend of: 35% Williamson malt whiskey from Islay aged in American hogshead oak barrels of several fillings, 34.2% Single Malt whiskey from the Caol Ila distillery (Islay) aged in American oak barrels hogshead of several fillings, 17.9% Single Malt whiskey from the Caol Ila distillery (Islay) aged in ex-Bourbon cask of several fillings, 11.8% Single Malt whiskey from the Caol Ila distillery (Islay) aged in cask ex-Port of several fillings and 1.1% of a Highland blend aged in a bespoke French oak cask with strong toast.
