THE FAVORITE - Cuvée La Flibuste - Vintage 1986 - 40%
La Favorite is one of the last independent distilleries in Martinique, along with Neisson. It was founded in 1842 on the remains of a sugar factory called Les Jambettes and was renamed La Favorite in 1851. Henri Dormoy acquired it in 1909 and made some improvements to transform the sugar factory into a distillery. Following a few twists and turns linked to a certain penchant for gambling by Albert Dormoy (Henri's son), La Favorite saw its activity cease in the 1930s. It would only resume its activity when André, his younger brother, took it over to completely renovate it in 1956. Today, La Favorite produces sugar cane on 60 ha and also obtains supplies from small local producers; it still operates entirely using a steam engine built in 1906 and is still going strong. Vesou (cane wine), obtained from cane juice fermented for a very long time, up to 72 hours, is distilled in two Creole columns, one of which is entirely made of copper and has been in operation since 1957 and the other, more modern, dating from 1986.
La Favorite's Cuvée Flibuste is part of the brand's most prestigious ranges and contributes to the rise of its reputation. This 1986 vintage was patiently aged for 30 years in ex-Cognac oak barrels under the watchful eye of Cellar Master Robert Charles. The wood, enriched with the complex and suave aromas of the Cognac that it once saw grow, will thus transmit part of its essence to the rum and enrich and complexify its aromatic palette. This Cuvée Flibuste by La Favorite is released each year in a limited number. All assembled, waxed and numbered by hand, thus honoring its authentic and artisanal character.
