SCHOENENBOURG, renowned since the Middle Ages, is the flagship of the RIQUEWIHR vineyard. The greatest wines of this commune are born on this terroir and have contributed to making it almost universal notoriety.
This terroir is distinguished by its topography (southern exposure, situation at the bottom of the valley, steep slope) and its very special geology of iridescent and gypsum marls from KEUPER, more or less mixed, and covered by spreading of Vosges sandstone. The combination of a light, non-sticky soil and a clay subsoil, rich in fertilizing elements, having good water retention, undoubtedly explains the dominant character of the terroir on the grape variety and the particularity of SCHOENENBOURG wines.
The wines of SCHOENENBOURG express undeniable aptitudes for aging and travel, richness, an extraordinary body while moving away from the type: peppery nose, even smoky, verticality masked by the body, mineral expression of a wine often hidden in his young age and moving towards fossilized reminders with time. Finally, the ability to integrate very high remaining sugar potentials, linked to Noble Rot almost always present.
SCHOENENBOURG are among the Very Great Wines of Alsatian Terroirs.
