Domaine de Saint Cosme - Gigondas - Le Claux 2017
Located in the heart of the Gigondas appellation, Saint Cosme is an historic domain of a unique kind: its Gallo-Roman wine-making site is made up of fermentation vats cut from the rock.
Acquired by the Barruol family in 1490, the property has seen 15 generations of winegrowers succeed one another. It includes 22 hectares of old vines with an average age of 60 years. In 1972, Henri Barruol was already convinced by organic viticulture. He practiced it to respect his vines, produce clean wines and protect the ecosystem of the Saint Cosme valley. Today, Louis Barruol, his son, manages the estate and created in 1997 a "Négoce-Vigneron".
Le Claux Gigondas comes from very old Grenaches planted at a place called "Le Claux". This 1.8-hectare vine, mentioned on the first wine land register of 1902 was to be uprooted in 1914. It was therefore certainly already quite old at that time. The men went to fight and the vines were not uprooted. In 1918, after four years of war, there was no money: the vineyard was therefore kept and is still there today. Aging lasts 12 months, 20% of which are new, 50% of first-use and 30% of second-use.
