KOPKE - Porto - Tawny - Colheita Port - Vintage 2011
Kopke is the oldest House of Porto, founded in 1638 in Portugal . The company was founded by Nicolau Köpke , the consul general of the Hanseatic League (historical association of northern European merchant towns). He ships his first bottles of wine to Northern Europe two years after moving from Hamburg to Portugal. In 1781, the House bought a farm in the Douro, thus changing from wine shipper to producer, focusing more on fortified Port wines.
Porto Colheita are made from a single harvest and aged in wood for as long as possible until bottling upon approval by the tasting committee.
The 2011 Colheita is a blend of Touriga Nacional (25%), Touriga Franca (25%), Tinta Roriz (25%) and Tinta Barroca (25%) . The grapes are picked by hand then destemmed and crushed. Maceration takes place in traditional lagares during fermentation until the desired level of sweetness is reached. Grape brandy is then added to create the final fortified wine. This wine contains 100 g/L of residual sugar.
