Compass Box Whiskey is a Scotch whiskey production company, founded by American John Glaser in 2000. After working in the wine trade and then for the great distiller Johnnie Walker, John Glaser took the plunge and launched his own whiskey business. making whiskey in his kitchen. A decade later, the company has successfully established stocks of matured whiskeys in Scotland, with a mixing room for blends and an office in London. Compass Box Whiskey sources cooperage oak from the French Vosges Forest and the woods of Missouri, USA. The company carefully selects each cask for its blends. Once blended, the whiskey is returned to the cask to develop additional flavor and character for six months to three years.
The company sparked controversy in 2015 due to disclosing too much information on their labels, particularly details of distilleries, cask types, ages and proportions in final blends. John Glaser has therefore launched a Scotch Whiskey Transparency Campaign with the aim of giving producers the opportunity to fully disclose the composition of a blend.
The Flaming Heart range focuses on the harmony between peat and toasted French oak. This 7th edition was bottled in August 2022 and is limited to 9,606 bottles. It draws its inspiration from iconic rock bands such as Metallica.
Flaming Heart 7th Edition is made up of a trio of peated malt whiskeys from exceptional distilleries: 23.4% of a Highland blend aged in French oak barrels of extreme toasting, 20.1% of charred barrels from the distillery Laphroaig , 17.1% charred American oak barrels from the Glen Elgin distillery, 12.8% Bourbon barrels from the Balmenach distillery, 8.1% Bourbon barrels from the Caol Ila distillery, 7.7% charred casks from the Talisker distillery, 4.1% charred casks from the Highland Park distillery, 3.1% leftover from the Nectar 15th Anniversary edition, 2.3% leftover from the Peat Monster Arcana edition and 1 .3% left over from the Flaming Heart 2018 edition.
Its peaty base is enriched by a sweet malt and notes of baking spices and dried fruits. It is a whiskey to be enjoyed until late at night. Drink it pure or with added water, or taste it with characterful cheeses.
