BYRRH - Grand Cinchona - 18%
Byrrh is a brand of French cinchona created in Thuir , Pyrénées-Orientales, in 1866, the Byrrh brand having been registered in 1873. It is a wine with the addition of mistelle and flavored essentially with quinine . Originally, the brothers Pallade and Simon Violet , itinerant drapers, decided to take advantage of the wine fever that the region was experiencing to develop a medicine based on wines, cinchona and composed of different spices such as coffee, cocoa, elderflower, chamomile, etc. The order of pharmacists of Montpellier does not see at all the arrival of alcohol on their stalls with a good eye and sues the two brothers and their medicine must therefore be withdrawn from sale. They then modify their recipe, reducing the dose of cinchona, and sell it as an aperitif.
Byrrh Grand Quiquina is the original recipe , as it was in the Roaring Twenties.
