BYRRH - Grand Quinquina - 18%
Byrrh is a prestigious French quinquina brand, born in Thuir, in the magnificent Pyrénées-Orientales, in 1866. The Byrrh brand, officially registered in 1873, embodies a wine fortified with mistelle and primarily flavored with quinine, an authentic symbol of regional expertise. Originally, the innovative Pallade and Simon Violet brothers, itinerant drapers, took advantage of the wine fever that animated the region to create a unique remedy based on wines, quinquina, and a subtle blend of carefully selected spices such as coffee, cocoa, elderflower, chamomile, among others. However, the Montpellier pharmacists' order strongly opposed this new alcoholic beverage on their shelves, initiating a lawsuit that led to the temporary withdrawal of the medicine. Faced with this adversity, the brothers revised their recipe by reducing the quinquina dose and repositioned Byrrh as a refined and essential aperitif.
Byrrh Grand Quinquina today represents the original recipe as it was during the legendary Roaring Twenties, celebrating the rich cultural and gustatory heritage of Southern France.
