Domaine de Saint Cosme - Gigondas - Le Claux 2018
Located in the heart of the Gigondas appellation, Saint Cosme is an historic domain of a unique kind: its Gallo-Roman wine-making site is made up of fermentation vats cut from the rock. Acquired by the Barruol family in 1490, the property has seen 15 generations of winegrowers succeed one another. It includes 22 hectares of old vines with an average age of 60 years. In 1972, Henri Barruol was already convinced by organic viticulture. He practiced it to respect his vines, produce clean wines and protect the ecosystem of the Saint Cosme valley. Today, Louis Barruol, his son, manages the estate and created in 1997 a "Négoce-Vigneron".
Le Claux is made from old Grenache vines planted at a place called "Le Claux" in Gigondas. This plot, planted in 1870 on the very first American rootstocks resistant to phylloxera, was to be uprooted in 1914 because the vine was starting to age and its production declined. In the 1970s the vines were so tired that Louis Barruol's father used pharaonic amounts of sheep manure to re-energize the Claux and today it is doing very well. The entire harvest is vinified and then maturing lasts 12 months, for 20% in new barrels, 50% in barrels of one wine and 30% in barrels of two wines.
